What should I do if I planned a vacation well in advance, but college starts that same week?

This may sound stupid, but I was not planning to go back to college until I recently lost my job. Now that I am planning to go to college I noticed that my vacation, which was booked months in advance, conflicted with my new school schedule. However, its just for that first week. Should I cancel or politely ask my professors if I may come in the following week?
